Alcester & Ragley 1sts 261-9 beat Long Itchington 1sts 219 all out by 42 runs

Losing the toss and being asked to bat first Alcester & Ragley got off to easily their best start of the season as openers Darren Turner and Ben Lee raised the 50 partnership in only 9 overs. This was not without alarm however as Long Itchington put down several chances in the opening overs. Turner reached his first half century for the club in the 17th over before he was out for 50 caught at mid-off from the bowling of Smith, with the score on 84, Lee followed 3 runs later caught off the same bowler for 87. Adam Warbrick and Ben Shuttleworth were then together in the middle for Ragley and accumulated runs well against some tight bowling from Andy Smith and James Rawbone, who bowled well without reward. After they had seen off this spell Warbrick in particular upped the run rate hitting some lovely boundaries as he also passed 50. Shuttleworth was out for 27 caught behind by Clarke off the bowling of Aulakh for 27 with the score at 173 having added an excellent 87 runs with Warbrick. Spinner Franks was introduced at this time and although he went for a few runs he took the crucial wicket of Warbrick, stumped for 67 and when 4 further wickets went down, including another 2 stumpings off Franks, the total had limped along to 210-8 after 41 overs. However all-rounder Tim Jackson entered the fray and immediately set about the bowling hitting his first ball for 4 and continuing the same vain for the remaining 4 overs. He hit 4 sixes, one a mammoth hit that almost cleared the car park at Ragley, and 3 fours as he reached his maiden 50 for the first XI. This late order innings hoisted the total to a very impressive 261-9. Franks dismissed Jackson with the last ball of the innings to claim his fifth wicket as he closed on 5-63, Smith 2-37 and Aulakh 2-47 were the other successful bowlers.

In response Long Itchington started off slowly against the opening bowling of Tim Jackson and Oli Swinburn. They had moved the score along with no real alarms to 30 when Desai was well caught behind for 12 by Paul Dipple off Swinburn. Opener Eadon and Perks then carried on in the same vein, scoring runs below the rate but not looking in much trouble. The pressure however was beginning to build as the score reached 70-1 in the 19th over, 190 required from 26 overs. Steve Capron then bowled Eadon for 30 as he looked to increase the tempo of the innings. Perks was batting well and scoring the occasional boundary, but he lost Goatley for 8, well caught off his own bowling by Warbrick and then captain Clarke was bowled by Man of the Match Warbrick for 13. 130-4 at this stage from 31 overs. With the pressure mounting Perks increased his own run rate with some good strokes through the off side. Franks was caught in the covers by Warbrick for 5 off the bowling of Turner. A good partnership between Wood and Perks then ensued as they as they added 50 in good time and lifted the score to 210-5 after 42 overs. At this stage the innings came to a very quick conclusion. Wood was caught by Turner off Swinburn for 21, Rajalingham was caught off the same bowler for 0, a superb direct hit from the boundary by Jackson accounted for Aulakh for 7 to put Long Itchington on 219-8. Swinburn then finished the innings with the last 2 wickets in his next over to wrap up the tail in good time and finish with 5- 50 from his 10 overs. Warbrick took 2-49, Turner 1-40 and Capron 1-41 as all the bowlers kept the pressure on the batsmen against such a large total.
